What Is a Request for Donation Letter?

Not all donations are proactively given by people who donate. There are donations that are earned through solicitations or through requests. This type of donation is requested by writing a request for donation letter. A request for a donation letter is written to formally tell the person or institution being requested for about where the donation will be used, how it will be used, and why they are doing this kind of request. You may also see request letter samples. Although a donation may be requested, it doesn’t mean that donations are being forcefully asked from people or institutions. It is just a formal way of saying that they need help. With this type of letter, the person who made the request may specify what form of donation they are requesting for.

What Is a Memorial Donation Letter?

A memorial donation is given to a family, group of people or organization who just lost an important member or those who need help. They can be in the form of flowers or monetary donations. Memorial donation letters are written to the family or to a certain organization that the family favors or the family is a member of. The said organization will convey to the family the help that you had offered. If you needed to give monetary donations for families who are in dire need, you may do so with utmost discretion as this may seem to be a sensitive issue.

What Are the Legal Aspects Associated with Donations?

Nowadays, donations are not only given to people who are in need, but they are mostly given to rich or powerful people to gain their favor or make such requests from them. So here are some of the legal aspects associated with donations.

  • Because of the reasons stated above, there are countries that limit the amount of donations a politician can accept, like certain gifts and large sums of of money. You can also check sample gift letters.
  • Donating money or property to charitable organizations may reduce one’s tax payable. A reduction in one’s taxes is actually a reduction in the state’s income.
  • If you give a donation or a gift, you are called a donor. If you are the one receiving or getting the gift then you are called a donee.

Is It Possible to Make Donations in the Name of Others?

Yes, it is possible to make donations in the name of others. Donating in the name of others is like donating in honor of a certain someone or a certain organization. These donations can be given in the name of a third party, in honor of a dead family member or a pet that is well-loved, and in honor groups or associations that no longer exist. Other examples would be for holiday and wedding gifts. There are also what we call memorial gifts and are often requested by the family or relatives of the deceased. Some memorial gifts are given if someone is unable to attend the funeral ceremony. These gifts are usually flowers.

Types of Donation

Donations come in various forms and they are also given for a lot of reasons, good or bad. So here we will discuss the types of donations. You might also want to check sample donation forms and sample gift letters.

  • A charitable bequests is a type of donation in which the donor writes in their will that they will be giving part of their property to a charitable institution upon their death. This is the simplest way of planning a donation or gift. The donor can also pass a percentage of their assets to one or more organizations. It can be done through the following:
    • Specific bequests are donations of certain amount of money or a certain identifiable asset. This is the most popular type of charitable bequests. However, the amount donated in a specific bequest does not grow even if the value of the asset has increased.
    • In a percentage bequest a set percentage of the value of the estate asset is provided in the will. This lets the charitable institutions to take advantage of the increasing value of the asset during the donor’s lifetime.
    • Residual bequest passes to the donee all of the assets or a percentage of what is remaining of the assets after all the taxes and debts are paid.
    • A contingent bequest is often made by donors who have no children who want to donate their entire fortune to charitable institutions. The catch in this type of bequests is that the donation can only be attained by the institution with the condition that a certain predecessor precedes the donor.
    • In a universal bequest all of the assets of the donor is divided among the different beneficiaries.
    • Designating bequest is when a charity is designated to be a contingent beneficiary of assets, life insurance policy in the event of the death of the donor.
    • The charity becomes the sole beneficiary of the donor in the event that all the beneficiaries die at the same time. This is called a simultaneous death clause.
  • An endowment fund is an important amount of money that is transferred to a charitable institution as a donation. The amount being transferred is from the income generated by a particular asset or capital.
  • A charitable annuity is a planned gift or donation where the donor transfers or donates a certain amount of money or property. This is in exchange of getting tax deductions and the charity will get continuous income. It is actually an agreement between the charity and the donor.
  • Giving gifts of life insurance can significantly generate tax savings for the donor and at the same time secure the inheritance of their heirs. A gift of life insurance can be because the donor wants to surrender their existing policy or they want to purchase a new policy.
  • Donating a certain real estate property or residence falls under the gifts of real estate type of donation. In this donation the donor can live and use their property while they are alive. Upon their death, the charitable institution will be able to inherit it.

Mr. and Mrs. Ryan Francom
456 Somewhere Road
Best Town, Best State 88889

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Francom,

In 2009 Number One Nonprofit helped over 350 underprivileged boys participated in Boy Scout activities in our community. They had a chance to learn to swim, learn basic survival and first-aid skills and learn how to work with other boys. More importantly, they were given the chance to develop confidence, to feel wanted and to develop dreams for their future, dreams that have included becoming engineers, accountants, doctors and politicians.

Here is what some of our alumni our have to say about the impact Scouts had on their lives:

"I don’t know where I would be without Scouts. My dream of becoming an Engineer really started with my first model rocket built in Scouts." - Bill
"Scouts gave me somewhere to go after school and kept me from getting into other trouble. Frightens me to think of where I would be without the help of my leaders and friends from scouts." - Tom

Our goal for 2010 is to help 420 boys participate in scouting activities including a full week at summer camp. Thanks to generous sponsors, we are well on our way to reaching our goal, but we still need help supporting the final 150 boys. Will you help us meet our goal to provide these wonderful boys with worthwhile activities by supporting a boy? Your donation will have a dramatic impact on the life of a young man.

Here is how your gift will impact them:

  • $100 – Your boy will receive a uniform and be able to participate in weekly activities for one year
  • $150 – Your boy will have a spot at a week long summer camp with activities such as horseback riding, crafts, swimming, canoeing and archery.
  • $250 – Your boy will receive a uniform, a week at scout camp and participate for 1 year in weekly activities.

Send your gift directly to us using the included return envelop or, if you wish, you may use our online donation website – www.numberonenonprofit.com.

All donations to Number One Non-Profit go directly to the boys we have been helping since 1985. Your gift will have tremendous impact on the life of a boy and help him to have the skills, vision and motivation to change his life. Thank you for partnering with us to help our boys.

Sincerely,

Bill Stevenson
President

P.S. – Since activities start the first week in January, our deadline for raising funds is 12/15/2009.
